“I don't begin with an image in mind. My paintings grow slowly through looking, responding and reworking.”

About the Artist
Lives in Sydney, Australia
Talya Brookman is a Sydney-based abstract painter whose work explores the relationship betweenlandscape, perception and place. Raised between London, Los Angeles and Australia, Brookman’s practice is informed by movement between geographies and by the ways landscape is absorbed over time, becoming part of how we remember, orient ourselves and understand where we belong.
Working primarily in oil, ink and natural mineral pigments on canvas, Brookman develops paintings through staining, gesture, wash and erasure. Forms emerge and dissolve through successive layers, shifting between density and openness, abstraction and recognition. Branching, erosion, growth and mineral formation recur as underlying structures, drawn from the rhythms of the natural world without becoming literal subjects.
The use of natural mineral pigments extends this relationship to landscape into the material itself, bringing substances of the earth directly into the paintings. Across the work, Brookman is interested in how forms gather, disperse and recur across different scales, and how something initially unfamiliar can gradually become recognisable. Her paintings occupy a space between the observed and the imagined, allowing landscape to remain present without being fixed to a particular place.
